Sun Poker Review

This review of Sun Poker will focus on the popular skin of InterPoker. This poker site is advertised more to American players, but it plays on the same international network as InterPoker. The games are soft and the traffic is growing, even during off-peak hours. It basically boils down to your color preferences as SunPoker.com is almost identical to InterPoker, though the two rooms do have slightly different promotions and bonuses.

Fish: 4
This network is largely dominated by international soft competition for lower stakes, and more fierce competition as the buy-ins increase. They have been adding more no-limit ring games, which I liked to see. The games have a large number of players who see the flop, which means that your premium cards will get cracked more often if you don't thin the competition. Fortunately, when you do hit an unbeatable hand, there are usually a few fish willing to be calling stations and pay you off.

Sharks: 2 (inverse rating)
Most of the lower limit games are pretty safe from very large sharks, but they do also offer very high stakes games, so many larger players are also attracted to Sun Poker. As is usually the case, skill level tends to increase as stakes increase. Even though you should adjust your style of play to fit each particular poker site, you don't want to be thrown off your game completely. Regardless of where you're playing, pay more attention to how your table plays than your preconceived notions about the site. Generally, play the style that is most comfortable and profitable to you at all sites rather than trying to completely alter your game.

Bait (promotions): 4.5
I knocked Sun's promotions score down a half-notch because I couldn't help but compare it to InterPoker's promotions. In all fairness, Sun has some very good promotions in general: a 100% deposit bonus and a reload bonus on top of that. Currently, you can earn up to $50 in deposit bonuses and then a $100 reload bonus on your second deposit. However, Inter Poker offers up to a $100 deposit bonus and a $100 monthly bonus. If bonuses are the key deciding factor on two very similar sites, then you might choose the skin that offers the higher bonus...

Skin (software): 3.5
SunPoker.com has very basic software, but it also runs a good speed. I appreciate fast games, and most full tables will reach 60+ hands an hour. If you're playing more hands every hour, your hourly win rate can be that much higher. While the graphics aren't highly detailed, the software has all the necessary features. Personally, I do like Sun's green and yellow color scheme as opposed to Inter Poker's green and brown, but that is just my personal preference.

Prey (tournaments): 4.5
SunPoker.com really shines in terms of tournaments, and this is one of my favorite parts to their site. They offer lots of tournaments daily at all hours of the night since most player traffic is from the UK and the rest of Europe. What I appreciate in a poker site's tournament choices is a wide of buy-ins to accommodate players of all levels. The tournament traffic is very high and this is one of Sun's strongest areas.

Overall Sun Poker Rating

Pearls (positives)
SunPoker.com offers weak competition and lots of tournaments daily at all levels. The signup bonus and monthly bonus is also a very good promotion for regular players.

Hooks (negatives)
While the promotions are good, they aren't quite as high as their network counterpart Inter Poker.

The Hammer (overall rating): 4

Tips for Playing at Sun Poker

Meat (tips)
Before you decide to play drawing hands like suited connectors, think about the past betting action before the flop. If you're at a table full of aggressive opponents who are raising every pot preflop, why play your mediocre hands? It's a slow leak in your game if you expect a raise but just call the minimum bet hoping that you won't have to put in any more money. If you're in an aggressive game, you should have a hand that you wouldn't mind calling a raise with or even raising the hand yourself.

Blubber (babble)
Sun, Paradise, and Pacific Poker? I love all these tropical, water-friendly poker sites. It's like they were made for sharks like you and I. You may think it's just a good marketing scheme, but if you've read about the REAL origins of poker, you know that these sites are just trying to copy the setting in my inaugural home game of poker. We played just off the coast of Maui and what better theme to have for an online poker site? You, too, can lay down the Hammer in tropical paradise. Texas Hold 'em? Where I'm from, we call it Kelp Keep 'em, the original shark tank.
