Playing Poker with Fish

Playing Fish

When playing any type of poker game, there is always a fish at the table, sometimes more than one.

You know the saying, "If you can't spot the sucker at the table, you are it".

This is true, so let's assume that you are not the fish before we get going. Playing poker with fish, or loose callers and bad bettors, can have its ups and downs. If you try not to let their loose calling and crap betting get at you, you can get the best of them and most of their money.

Don't you hate it when you try to bluff at a pot with a big bet and someone with 3rd or 4th bottom pair calls you down? These are fish - they have high hopes in every hand and loose call way too often. On top of their bad plays and constant chasing, when they win they act like they are the next Chan. This can get irritating, especially when they start hitting hands, and they may even put you on tilt. The following tips and strategies apply equally well when playing online or home poker games.

Fish and Tilt

Tilting into a fish is the worst thing you can do, and it can cost you a lot more chips and money because they tend to be excessive bettors. You should take into consideration, "what if they have a hand this time?", and always remember to ask yourself that question. If you lower your standards of play down to those of a fish, it makes you no better a player than they are, and you will lose. You can semi-lower your standards when in a hand against a fish. If you have top pair and they are betting, if the bet isn't too serious of a bet, you can call them down and probably win. If you start betting them with 3rd or 4th bottom pair (playing like them), this is when you will get stuck and lose.

Fish and Bluffing

I am strongly against bluffing into players you know are fish. They WILL call you! Trust me, I have learned the hard way. I have had idiots call me with ace high and no pairs. They call it ALL! The same goes for chasing when a fish is betting into you. With normal or good advanced players, you can chase a straight or a flush and miss but still take down the pot with a nice big bet on the river. This is not an option when it comes to fish, so be careful how much you pay to chase a hand down against players like these.

Fishing Strategies

What is the best way to bait your line and catch that fish? The answer is simple, play how you usually play and eventually you will take their stack. If you wait until you have a nut or a very good hand when they have a pair or two, you will catch them. Back to fish having high hopes in all their hands - they WILL call you down when you lay out that big bet.

I know that sometimes it gets really frustrating watching a bad player take down pots by calling big bets on an unreal chase and catch. It is even worse when you try to steal the pot and they call you with some insane small pair. If you always remember the things I have mentioned here, you will not fall into tilt when playing poker against these types of players. I know it's really easy to play just like them - on draws, small pairs, and try to get lucky against them - but if you just keep your head in the game, you will come out on top of them every time.

Happy fishing! For best results use at least a 200 lb. line and test your pole at the tables.
