Women in Poker

In the late 1800's it wasn't very common for women to sit in and play saloon poker games. A few famous women such as Calamity Jane and Alice Ivers, otherwise known as "Poker Alice", were the very beginning of women in poker. Poker has drastically changed forever since the times of gun toting cowboys. It is my opinion that online poker rooms are a big stepping stone as to why there are so many women poker players today.

Women and Online Poker Rooms

Before the Internet, most women who were raising kids would watch daytime television and yap on the phone while watching little Billy and Suzy all day long, day after day. Again, times have changed and online poker rooms have helped me pass the time for years now. A lot of women I know are usually too intimidated to sit at a live game and play. Online poker offers the thrills of gambling without the intimidation of sitting at a live game or feeling vulnerable because you are a woman.

Training for Live Games and Tournaments

Online poker is a good training tool to get new players ready for live games and tournaments. With all of my online experience I feel much more comfortable about sitting at a live game or tournament now because I have developed skills. And when you have the skills, intimidation fades away.

Now, I am no bra-burner or women's rights activist, but darn it ladies, let's see some of you at the final table of the WSOP this year! You may see me at that final table of the main event, (that is if I win a satellite or get a backer in time!) and I would like to see maybe Annie Duke, Jennifer Harmon, or YOU there with me! Are my hopes too high, or can woman set a new record in poker this year?

Men vs. Women Poker Players

Women, compared to men, usually tend to be more patient, less aggressive creatures. Patience is always good in poker, but you have to be aggressive as well. Once you learn to mix it up and be aggressive when you have to, along with your patience you can be unstoppable.

Women's Online Poker Leagues

I play with a women's online poker league and I have to say, it is very different than playing with a mix of men and women. This gets a little tricky for me sometimes, especially when it comes to reading what the other women are holding. I have noticed a lot of women in my league are too passive and check hands they should bet big on, then whine when they lose to someone who rivered a straight because they checked their 2 pair to the river. This is what I mean when I say that a lot of women can stand to be more aggressive. If you would have bet your 2 pair like you should have, the straight chaser may have folded out of the pot.
